Urunga Wetlands, northern NSW

This place was once a wasteland of toxic heavy metal contamination due to the activity of an antimony processing plant which began activity in 1969. 400 tonnes of product, 160,000 tonnes of waste. The plant was abandoned in 1974 with no clean-up, and the site remained that way until 2011 when ownership was transferred to the state government and $10 million was invested in a remediation process that started in 2015 and finished in 2017. It is now a haven for wildlife with a thriving ecosystem. An amazing success story of land reclamation for the benefit of locals and the environment.
